RENOVATING BLESSED SACRAMENT 1994-2004
Fr. Paul L. Weinberger resided at Blessed Sacrament Church from 1994-2004 he went to live in Mexico for a short time while to learn the Mexican Culture. He wanted to be able to speak the language fluently and serve the Hispanic communities. When Fr. Paul returned to Dallas, he heard that Blessed Sacrament Church was going to be closed down because the church was in great debt and had lost parishioners and also needed renovations very badly. He asked Bishop Grahmann to give him 10 years to rebuild the church again.
Fr. Paul worked very hard to renovate the church in many ways. The walls were redone; lights and beautiful stained glass windows were put up. For the cafeteria/basement, tile was donated to replace old dreary concrete. The tile work continued into the CCD Building and was a great addition to the floors and walls of the classrooms. A long curvy handicap walk was build for those with wheel chairs or the elderly that could not come down the stairs to the basement on Sunday mornings to enjoy a breakfast. The parking lot had incredibly large holes and was repaved. The surrounding landscape was also given uplift. Fr. Paul loved to plant beautiful flowers and trees. It was also during his time here at Blessed Sacrament that he found it necessary to add thorn plants in the front of the church premises. The plants grew into a tangled weave, which in turn helped control vandalism. You cannot get through these plants without a scratch; it will definitely stop you and make you think twice. You would never know that these plants could really hurt you when you see the beautiful red berries they give. A beautiful tall crucifix that stands on a large pole was placed in front of the plaza surrounded by four tall trees and fenced. This central adornment was donated by a generous family so that parishioners could stand around and meditate before going into the church. Fr. Paul never stopped imagining the potential beauty Blessed Sacrament Church had.
