SOME MORE HISTORY
In June of 1990, father James Orozco became the pastor of Blessed Sacrament.
He said in one of his Sunday homilies that the year ahead would be full of blessings and grace. Father James did no let his parishioners down. Since his arrival at Blessed Sacrament, father made changes. Some of these changes may have viewed by some as good and by others as bad, but nonetheless, the changes were made in the best interest of the parish family.
The mass schedule was changed, the bulletin format was changed. Some of the changes were small, but significant, for father James had a reason for it all.
The children's mass which was normally held in the basement of the church, was to be changed to the church itself. Many of the adults started to ask the magic question "why". The answer was simple. The children were not safe in the basement. Father James explained to the congregation one Sunday that if there were to be a fire, explosion, or other natural disaster, the children would not be able to escape and while access to the stairs was available, many might be crushed in trying to make the exit.
Small changes which made big differences.
Father, who has a devotion to St. John Bosco, began a "novena" on honor of the Mary, advocate of Christians. This novena was to be said on Tuesday evenings. The novena consisted of the celebration of mass and a series of prayers and scripture readings. This novena was not so much a change, but something new.
The spiritual aspects of father James homilies are felt by many, Sunday to Sunday. He did not read from a book or from notes, but he spoke from his heart. He told stories and jokes and everything had meaning. He had a vision for the parish which was a vision of caring for the physical needs of the community as well as the spiritual.
The cultures at Blessed Sacrament may be many, but we are all children of the same God.
